The Galiwin'ku Aged Care Service is managed by Galiwin'ku Community Incorporated and is funded by the Commonwealth Government's Community Aged Care Packages Program. The aim of this program is to support older people and their families so that the older person is able to stay safely and happily in their own home.
The Ngalkanbuy Health Centre administers the Community Aged Care Program at Galiwin'ku.
Galiwin'ku Aged Care Service is funded for 16 packages. This means 16 older people in Galiwin'ku are currently on the program. The service employs 5 permanent staff and a number of casual staff who help with garden maintenance.
Staff are encouraged and supported to develop their skills so they are able to provide quality care to our clients.
The services provided by Galiwin'ku Aged Care Service include:
Personal Care: In the Aged Care building we have a disabled access bathroom, which makes it easy for people to have a bath. As well as having a bath older people come to have a haircut, a shave or a manicure.
Washing: We provide a regular washing service.
Day respite: The Aged Care building has a small kitchen and comfortable chairs. Older people come for a cup of tea and damper, to watch television, relax and have a chat with their family and friends.
Health Checks: Aged Care staff assit with regular health checks and clinic appointments.
Dosette Box Collection: Aged Care staff assist with medication management.
Fruit and vegetable delivery: A box of fresh fruit and vegetables and meat is delivered every week to those on the Aged Care Program.
Family support: The Aged Care Service also works to support the older person's family so that they are better able to provide quality care to their older relative. Aged Care organises family meetings to discuss the care of the older person. Together with the family, we develop a care plan for everyone on the program. The care plan lists all the things the older person needs help with and who and how we will help. We provide support to families at the time of funerals for example liaising with funeral services, and writing letters of support.
Respite: We can arrange respite in Darwin for people. Sometimes older people like to go to Darwin for a break. This is organised in consultation with the family.
Gardening: Recently we have started a garden maintenacne program.
Hunting Trip: We regularly take our clients on hunting trips.
Allied Health: We assist visiting health professionals such as the physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist. They assist us to provide better care to our clients by suggesting aids such as walking frames, shower chairs etc. They help us to develop exercise programs for our clients.
Education: We arrange education sessions for clients and their families.
Sharing stories: We provide opportunities for older people to share their stories and experiences.
Special Events: We organise special events such as Christmas party's for our clients.
Shopping: We can assist our clients with shopping, eg. we order things such as clothes, sheets and mattresses from Darwin for our clients.
Transport: We assist with transport to the clinic, to ceremonies and outstations.
Advocacy: We work as advocates for our clients. If they are having problems with Centrelink or need repairs to their house we talk to the right people to try and fix the problem.
